The evening combines structured workshops with competition and social dancing, creating an experience that is as valuable for serious dancers as it is exciting for anyone who simply loves being on the dance floor.

About Safari Swing
Safari Swing is a unique West Coast Swing dance experience built around bringing exceptional international instruction to South Africa.
The event combines high-level West Coast Swing training with social dancing and safari experiences, creating an opportunity for dancers to learn from some of the best while experiencing something completely different.
This September, Safari Swing brings that same spirit to Five6seven8 Dance Studio in Randburg — giving local dancers the chance to train with internationally recognised instructors without having to leave Johannesburg.

Start the evening with an hour of West Coast Swing instruction from Leo Lorenzo, bringing his energetic teaching style and international competition experience to the studio.
20:00 – 21:00 | Workshop with Robert Royston & Mia Pastor
Continue with a special workshop led by two highly accomplished figures in the West Coast Swing world, Robert Royston and Mia Pastor.
21:00 – 23:00 | Jack & Jill + Social Dancing
Put your skills to the test with the Jack and Jill competition before the floor opens for two hours of social dancing.
Meet the Instructors
Leo Lorenzo
Leo Lorenzo is an accomplished West Coast Swing dancer and instructor whose journey began with percussion, gymnastics and a love for music.
After discovering West Coast Swing, he quickly rose through the ranks under the guidance of Sebastien Cadet and Blandine Iche, earning four World Championship titles and achieving All Star status within just three years.
In February 2024, Leo reached the prestigious Champion level and continues to train alongside some of the world’s leading dancers. Since 2023, he has also dedicated himself to teaching, bringing an energetic, accessible and genuinely joyful approach to his classes.
Robert Royston
Robert Royston is an eight-time US Open Swing Dance Champion, renowned choreographer, performer and educator.
His career has taken him far beyond the competitive dance floor. Robert has performed alongside artists including Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood and Midland, and has choreographed for Taylor Swift’s Love Story and Fearless tours.
A member of multiple prestigious Dance Halls of Fame, Robert is also known for his structured teaching methodology and has been the voice of the US Open for more than two decades.
His combination of experience, technical knowledge and passion for teaching makes this a rare opportunity for dancers in Johannesburg.
Mia Pastor
Mia Pastor discovered West Coast Swing in 2014 after growing up dancing socially at family gatherings in Lima, Peru.
She quickly progressed through the competitive ranks, becoming an All Star competitor and winning the Rising Star Showcase at the Open in 2019.
Since then, Mia has continued to establish herself internationally, including a 2nd-place Showcase finish at the 2023 US Open, alongside appearances on stage and in film.
A certified teacher and judge, Mia has trained with leading professionals across West Coast Swing and other dance styles. She specialises in connection through the Franklin Method/Shared Center System, combining technical skill, creativity and a genuine passion for helping dancers grow.
Jack & Jill Competition + Social Dancing
After the workshops, the evening shifts from structured learning to putting your dancing into practice.
The Jack & Jill format randomly pairs leaders and followers, challenging dancers to respond to different partners and music. It is a great way to test your musicality, connection, adaptability and improvisation.
Then the floor opens for social dancing.
This is where everything you’ve learned gets to come alive. Dance with new people, connect with the local West Coast Swing community and enjoy an evening surrounded by dancers who share your love of movement.
